The first ever College Football Playoff capped off tonight with another exciting National Championship game to add to the history books. After upsetting the top seeding Alabama Crimson Tide in the Sugar Bowl, The Buckeyes came in as underdogs again against the highly regarded Oregon Ducks in the first ever College Football Playoff Championship.
Was Urban Meyer going to be able to develop a game plan to knock off the #1 AND the #2 ranked teams in the country? Was a third string quarterback in only his third career start going to be able to guide this team to a college football national title? The odds were certainly against them, but Ohio State was up for the task tonight.
Despite going down 7-0 early in the first quarter, the Buckeyes came right back. Capping off a 97-yard drive later in the quarter, star running back Ezekiel Elliott broke off a 33-yard touchdown run to tie it at 7-7.
After a couple of defensive stands against Heisman trophy winner, Marcus Mariota and the high-powered Oregon offense, the Buckeyes kept driving down the field and added two touchdowns from quarterback, Cardale Jones. 21-7 was the score and Ohio State was in control.
However, after a fourth turnover by the Buckeyes offense and 13 unanswered points by the Ducks, uncertainty started to set in for OSU midway through the third quarter. The score was now 21-20 and Ohio State needed to put a big drive together to take control of the game again.
And that’s when the offense turned it back on. The running game would not let up for the Buckeyes as tailback, Ezekiel Elliott would rip off big runs and rush for two touchdowns on consecutive drives to take a 35-20 lead.
From there, the game completely got away from the Oregon Ducks. Unable to get another going on offense, the Buckeyes would get the ball back again twice more and add another touchdown to the final score.
Ohio State: 42. Oregon: 20.
