The NFL uses the Super Bowl to determine the league champion, with over a dozen teams competing each year to earn the coveted Lombardi Trophy, named after legendary coach Vince Lombardi. The Super Bowl always brings excitement with it, no matter which teams end up being the finalists.
Since the Super Bowl began in 1967, 28 franchises have played in the big game. Of the 28, 20 have won and four have won at least five times. NFL fans are often curious about which teams have enjoyed the most Super Bowl wins, and the answer may surprise some. Check out the Super Bowl careers of these top teams.

New England Patriots
Some teams have had more success in the stadium than others, but few have been nearly as successful as the New England Patriots. The Patriots have become a household name due to their dominance on the football field. They’re equally revered by their fans and feared by opposing teams. Quarterback Tom Brady spent his first 20 seasons with the New England Patriots, leading them to several remarkable AFC victories. The team’s first Super Bowl win was at Super Bowl XXVI in 2002. The then-underdogs faced off against the St. Louis Rams and defeated them 20-17.
Not only have the Patriots won six Super Bowls, but they’ve won two back-to-back Super Bowls — an accomplishment few other teams can claim. After winning Super Bowl XXXVIII in 2004 by defeating the Carolina Panthers 32-29, the Patriots would crush the Philadelphia Eagles the following year in Super Bowl XXXIX with a final score of 24-21. The Patriots went 17 straight seasons with at least 10 wins and would win the Lombardi Trophy once again in 2014, 2015, and 2018. Despite losing the Bowl to the New York Giants in 2007, the team remained undefeated throughout the regular season.

Pittsburgh Steelers
Tying the Patriots for the No. 1 NFL team are the Pittsburgh Steelers winning six titles. The Steelers are one of the oldest teams in the NFL, and many know them as being the only team in history to win back-to-back Super Bowls twice in a row — once in 1975 and 1976 and again in 1978 and 1979. Many fans credit coach Chuck Noll for assembling a team of some of the most dominant players in history.
The team included Hall of Fame honorees Terry Bradshaw, known for being the first passer to win four Super Bowls, and defensive tackle Joe “Mean Joe” Greene, who earned NFL Honors five times and All-Conference recognition 11 times. In 2006, the Steelers won Super Bowl XL against the Seattle Seahawks in a 21-10 blowout. The team became champions again in 2009 at Super Bowl XLIII after a memorable touchdown pass from quarterback Ben Roethlisberger to wide receiver Santonio Holmes.
While the Steelers lost the 2011 Super Bowl XLV to the Green Bay Packers 31-25, many will remember how they used the song “Black and Yellow” as their fight song. They put up a strong fight that became one for the ages, featuring top receiver Mike Wallace, veteran Hines Ward, and tight end Heath Miller in what was one of the strongest defenses in the league at the time.
Dallas Cowboys
Right on the heels of the Patriots and Steelers are the Dallas Cowboys, with an accumulated total of five Super Bowl wins, including two in the 1970s and three in the 1990s. The team won its first Lombardi Trophy after crushing the Miami Dolphins in Super Bowl VI in 1972. Quarterback Bob Lilly’s 29-yard takedown of Miami quarterback Bob Griese ended up being one of the longest and most memorable sacks in NFL history. They would win again in 1978, defeating the Denver Broncos 27-10.
The Cowboys would also defeat the Buffalo Bills twice — once at Super Bowl XXVII in 1993 and again at Super Bowl XXVIII in 1994. They capped off their winning streak in 1996 against the Steelers at Super Bowl XXX with a 27-17 victory. After weeks of surgery, defensive end Charles Haley played strong, putting up one sack, three quarterback pressures, and five tackles. He would become the first player in the NFL to win five Super Bowl championships.

San Francisco 49ers
There’s little doubt that the San Francisco 49ers have featured some of the most legendary football players in NFL history, including quarterbacks Steve Young and Joe Montana, known for being some of the most accurate and efficient passers in the league’s history. Wide receivers Jerry Rice and Terrell Owens also landed spots in the Pro Football Hall of Fame for their collective effort to help the 49ers secure a spot in the playoffs. The 49ers’ Super Bowl achievements include three wins in the 1980s, beginning with a 26-21 win against the Cincinnati Bengals at Super Bowl XVI.
In one of the most thrilling moments in NFL history, Joe Montana threw a behind-the-back touchdown pass to receiver John Taylor to defeat the Denver Broncos at Super Bowl XXIV in 1990. The year 1995 marked their latest win, where they defeated the San Diego Chargers 49-26 at Super Bowl XXIX. In one of the best Super Bowl performances of all time, Steve Young passed for 325 yards and threw a record six touchdowns. With five wins, the 49ers tie with the Cowboys for the No. 2 team with the most Super Bowl wins.

Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers made history by being the first-ever Super Bowl winners twice, winning Super Bowls I and II in 1967 and 1968. The team also boasts nine pre-Super Bowl NFL titles — more than any other team. Top coaches Earl Lambeau and Vince Lombardi helped lead the Packers to win a record 11 NFL championships out of 13 total. The Packers’ top quarterback Bart Starr won MVP honors and had one of the best postseason performances ever in the NFL Championship Game against the Dallas Cowboys, landing the team a spot at the first Super Bowl.
It would be a while before the Packers won again, but they finally came back in full force in the 1997 Super Bowl XXXI, defeating the Patriots 35-21. Quarterback Brett Favre played a big role in the Packers’ first major run in nearly 30 years by making a Super Bowl-record touchdown pass of 81 yards just in the nick of time. Their next big Super Bowl win was in 2011 at Super Bowl XLV, where they defeated the Steelers 31-25 in yet another stunning victory bringing the dynasty to four Super Bowl wins.

New York Giants
Also proudly carrying four Super Bowl victories are the New York Giants. The Giants’ wins include Super Bowl XXI in 1987, XXV in 1991, XLII in 2008, and XLVI in 2012. Few teams could put up such a strong fight against the Patriots quite like the Giants. At Super Bowl XLII, Eli Manning would earn MVP honors after completing 19 of 34 passes for 255 yards, finishing two touchdowns and nailing one interception.
Just four years later, the Giants would again go head-to-head against the Patriots at Super Bowl XLVI, winning by a slim margin of 21-17. Manning would again win MVP honors for his exceptional performance. While many fans know the Giants for their rare wins against the Patriots, older fans may remember them for their performance in Super Bowl XXV, where they defeated the Buffalo Bills by a one-point margin. The game was the only one in Super Bowl history won by such a slim margin.
Denver, Washington, and Los Angeles
Topping off the list of teams with the most Super Bowl wins are the Denver Broncos, Washington Commanders (formerly the Redskins), and Los Angeles Raiders, with three wins each. The Broncos reigned most recently, beginning in 1998 at the Super Bowl XXXII. They won the next year and would win their third Super Bowl against the Carolina Panthers in a 24-10 blowout at Super Bowl 50. Early in the game, the Broncos took the lead, recording an impressive seven sacks and forcing four turnovers. The matchup was one of the strongest in Super Bowl history, and the Broncos didn’t disappoint.
The Washington Commanders (as the Redskins) also put up a fierce fight and took home the Lombardi Trophy a total of three times, including twice in the 1980s and once in the early 1990s. Quarterbacks Joe Theismann, Doug Williams, and Mark Rypien each helped the team put up a strong offense, carrying them to victory. In their third win, they defeated the Buffalo Bills 37-21.
The Los Angeles Raiders celebrated three Super Bowl wins for the NFL in 1977, 1981, and 1984. In their first major win, the Raiders defeated the Minnesota Vikings 32-14, led by renowned coach John Madden. Their next two big wins would be against the Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Redskins for final scores of 27-10 and 38-9, respectively.
