History is being made this Christmas in the NFL. For the first time in league history, there will be a triple-header on Christmas Day. Six teams will play three games, including four playoff contenders from 2021 and the Super Bowl champions of 2021 and 2020. Here’s everything you need to know about the NFL football games on Christmas Day:
Which NFL Teams Are Playing on Christmas?
The three games this year on Christmas Day are:
- Green Bay Packers at Miami Dolphins.
- Denver Broncos at Los Angeles Rams.
- Tampa Bay Buccaneers at Arizona Cardinals.
The 6-8 Packers are currently fourth in the NFC North and the 8-6 Dolphins are currently second in the AFC East. These stats paint a clear picture of Miami as the favorite to win on Christmas Day, but Aaron Rogers still has the potential to surprise the Dolphins and win the game. With 23 touchdown passes this season, Aaron Rogers is tied for eighth in the league. However, he is ranked 13th in total yards with 3,093 so far this season. Tua Tagovailoa, the quarterback for the Dolphins, is currently second in overall total quarterback ranking in the league.
The Broncos have been a surprisingly lackluster competitor in the AFC this season, with a 4-10 record. The 4-10 Rams are in a similar situation. Luckily, this means that the two teams are likely to be a good match for one another on Christmas Day.
Russell Wilson, who was on the injury report last week, has been cleared and will start this week. So far this season, Wilson has thrown for 2,805 total yards and eleven touchdowns. The Rams’ starting Quarterback Matthew Stafford is on the injured reserve list. Baker Mayfield was recently signed by the Rams to replace Stafford and led the Rams to a surprising win in his first game with the team. Christmas day will be Mayfield’s third start with the Rams, and he will have more familiarity with the offense than in his initial two starts. No one could have predicted these teams would be in this spot on Christmas Day, but that’s why they play the games…
In the NFC South, the 6-8 Buccaneers currently hold first in the division. The Cardinals also have a losing record of 4-10 and are sitting in third place in their division. A Cardinals win isn’t a huge threat in this game, but they are likely to give Tom Brady a tougher time than many people may expect. The numbers for Tom Brady show about 3,897 passing yards so far this season, making him third overall in the league. Kyler Murray is trailing behind with 2,368 passing yards.

During the Packers vs. Browns game, the Browns were trailing by nine at the beginning of the fourth quarter and were able to score one touchdown, but it wasn’t enough to clinch the lead before the end of the game. The Colts held their lead the entire game.
History of Christmas NFL Games
The NFL popularized Christmas football games in 1989. Before that, there had been only one NFL game played on or after Christmas Day. It happened in 1943 because of scheduling complications caused by World War II. In the 1970s, the league decided it was best not to interfere with the holiday. Since 1989, the league has scheduled one or two games on or around Christmas to allow families to enjoy football together over the holiday. 2022 is the first year since 2010 that Christmas falls on a Saturday, so the league was able to schedule three regular-season games that day.
Whether you’re a super fan or just starting to support a new team, it can be fun to analyze the stats before watching the game. Here’s some in-depth analysis for fanatics of each team playing on Christmas Day:
Green Bay Packers
The Green Bay Packers haven’t performed well so far this season with only 3,070 total passing yards and 1,768 total rushing yards. They’ve scored an average of 20.5 points per game. In previous seasons, it may have been easy to predict a Green Bay win against the Dolphins, but the tides have turned this season and the Dolphins are looking stronger than ever.
This year might be the time to get your Fanatics gear for the Miami Dolphins, as they’re having a very strong season. They’ve scored an average of 24.6 points per game and have 40 total touchdowns so far. The Dolphins have a total of 3,830 passing yards and 1,356 rushing yards this season so far. As a contender for the win on Christmas, the Dolphins may be able to make a historic playoff run later in the season.
The Broncos are having a rough season, but their Christmas Day game against the Rams could make their fans feel a little better about the team’s prospects. They have totaled 2,917 total passing yards for the year and have scored an average of 15.6 points per game. The Broncos have fewer interceptions on average than their opponents, which is one positive aspect of this year’s team.
Los Angeles Rams
The Rams have struggled to gain momentum this year, but Christmas Day might be the time for a season turnaround. They have 2,644 passing yards for the season and 1,191 rushing yards. The only thing that may hold them back is their 4-10 record this season. They’ve scored an average of 16.4 points per game.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have had a great year so far compared to other teams in their division, but it may not be enough to propel the team to the championship again this year. They have 3,758 total passing yards and 1,040 total rushing yards this season. Brady’s pass-heavy offense could run into trouble on Christmas against the Cardinals’ defense, but a Buccaneers victory is a good possibility.
The Arizona Cardinals have scored an average of 20.9 points per game. They have 3,314 passing yards and 1,565 rushing yards so far this season. It may be difficult for the Cardinals to shine on Christmas Day, but as the saying goes, “On any given Sunday.”
